Wingshooting
The finest pheasant, dove and quail hunting in the Southeast.
Wingshooting is relatively modern by historical standards, with origins beginning sometime in the middle of the seventeenth century. Over the centuries, wingshooting has become a beloved pastime by sportsmen the world over, and we carry on that southern tradition here at the Westervelt Lodge.
In 1974 Westervelt Lodge added skeet and trap fields, and four years later the first wingshooting school was offered. Since that day, Westervelt has been as much a wingshooting lodge as it is a whitetail lodge.
Quail Hunting
Let our hard-running bird dogs and experienced hunting guides take you on a traditional plantation-style quail hunt full of fast flushing birds and multiple opportunities to fill your game bag. Our management program has created the optimum landscape for a challenging experience. Towering Southern pines surround well-groomed, quality hunting courses. We offer plantation-style quail hunting or mixed bag hunting that can include chukar and pheasant. From the challenge of hunting hard-flying birds in our upland pine forests to our fencerow style of open field hunting, our bird hunting experience is unmatched.
Quail hunting in Alabama, and across the Southeast is world-famous. At Westervelt Lodge you will experience the finest quail hunting the South has to offer. The hunting season in Alabama generally runs mid-October through March 30.
The location of Westervelt in the heart of the South, along with the care we take to manage the land, provides our guests with unbelievable quail hunting experience. Southern hospitality, courteous guides, comfortable lodging, and gourmet food make for a memorable hunting trip, unmatched in quality.
Pheasant Shooting, European Style
Hunters are stationed in 10 blinds surrounding a hidden tower. Three hundred birds are flighted as single or doubles through the shooters as blinds are rotated every 15 shots. Our elite, experienced Labrador Retrievers collect every downed bird. Large events can consist of two 20-gun shoots: one morning session and one in the afternoon. Refreshments are provided during the shoot.
Pheasant shoots are a perfect activity for charity fundraisers.
Dove Hunting
When it comes to dove hunting, Alabama has over fifty-one thousand square miles of land to choose from, however, few places compare to Westervelt (though, we might be a bit biased).
Dove hunting is a deeply rooted southern tradition and has been an annual event at Westervelt Lodge for over fifty years. Our dove fields have been planted and prepared for several months in anticipation of the season, doing everything possible to insure a “good shoot.” Food and water are important ingredients for a good dove field, as well as proximity to good roosting habitat. Our fields are routinely scouted to provide our clients with the latest intel on dove activities.
The distinctive rapid flight speed of dove makes shooting a challenge, and for this reason many sportsmen make a point to go out in search for the dove’s each fall. You can recognize this game bird by its distinctive physical features: small head, short neck, stout body with short legs, sleek greyish plumage, and the trademark fleshy protuberance at the base of the bill.
- Perfect for private groups, corporate groups, and individuals alike.
- Dove season opportunities are based on the availability of birds, as doves are migratory wild birds that can go and come at will.
- We recommend planning ahead! Dove hunting is a popular sport, and many hunters plan their trips or guided hunts well in advance.
